The player became the builder.
From a small New York town to professional courts across the world — and back home to build the next generation.
Chasing the game around the world.
John Merchant III grew up in Monticello, New York, where the game gave him a purpose most kids couldn't see coming. He earned his stripes as a standout guard at Dowling College, then did what most players only dream about — he turned pro and took his career overseas, competing across eleven countries and every kind of gym imaginable.
Along the way he learned that talent is common and opportunity is not. He saw players with pro tools who never got seen, and young kids at home with nobody to show them the path. So in 2020 he founded Building Legends — first as a brand and a promise, now as a full player-development and youth platform.
Today John trains athletes with a professional's eye, evaluates prospects the way NBA organizations do, and builds camps and community experiences that develop leaders, not just scorers. Building Legends is the flagship — but the mission is John's: develop athletes, build leaders, create opportunities.

Monticello to the world — and back.
A professional path most trainers simply don't have. Every stop shaped how John develops the players he trains today.
